The association Psychosoziale Hilfen Bochum offers counselling and advocacy for people with a mental health problem and elderly people. The Association in Bochum helps citizens with a mental health problem to lead a humane and independent life outside of clinics and nursing homes.

The association was founded in 1979. Since 1990 Psychosoziale Hilfen have also been active in supporting elderly people. The association is part of the local provision of socio-psychiatric services of the City of Bochum. Its activities are divided into the following six sections:

Socio-psychiatric counselling centre

The socio-psychiatric drop-in and counselling-centre is part of the socio-psychiatric service of the City of Bochum. It is responsible for the provision of out-patients services for the North and East districts. People with a mental health problem are offered counselling, advocacy and rehabilitation measures.

Supported housing

The Association offers supported housing to people with a serious mental health problem who, without this continuous help, otherwise would have to live in a clinic or nursing home. This help is designed for citizens living in the North and East districts of Bochum, who mainly live in their own accommodation.

Day-centre

The day-centre offers citizens with a chronic mental health problem help to structure their day. The offer focuses on cognitive, emotional and social abilities, which are trained in the group. Occupational therapy and gymnastics are part of the programme. The social workers and the clients of the day centre agree on common targets, which are implemented through individual and group sessions. Our goal is to increase the life quality of our clients.

Managing the affairs of mentally impaired people

If an adult is (partly) unable to manage his/her affairs the Court of Protection appoints a custodian (Betreuer). Psychosoziale Hilfen manages the affairs of mentally impaired people who need such a professional custodian. Psychosoziale Hilfen also supports citizens who are appointed as volunteer custodians by the Court of Protection.

Contact Centre

Psychosoziale Hilfen offers a contact centre for the North and East districts of Bochum where people with a mental health problem can meet and spend some time of the day talking, playing, eating and doing other activities. There is also the possibility of spending some time in peace.

Office for elderly people

Psychosoziale Hilfen offer a centre for elderly people within their neighbourhood. The centre is designed to enable senior citizens to establish local contacts and experience creativity, relaxation and the "joy of life". In the drop-in centre the elderly people are helped to rediscover their abilities and interests. They are also advised about all questions regarding ageing.
